Toolbox-compatible cover FAQ
Can you use a tonneau cover with a toolbox?
Yes, with a cover built for it. A standard tonneau cover runs the full length of the bed and will not clear a crossover box. The covers on this page are cut shorter and mount in front of the box, so the tool box stays and the rest of the bed is still covered.
What size tool box do these covers fit?
Extang sizes the Trifecta Toolbox 2.0 and the Solid Fold Toolbox 2.0 for most 18 to 20 inch crossover toolboxes. Access builds the Toolbox Compatible cover for most 19 to 21 inch over-the-rail boxes. Each cover is sold on its own, so the measurement that matters is the depth of the box already in the bed.
How does the cover seal where it meets the toolbox?
Extang uses a patented L-Channel that clamps between the box and the bed and bridges the gap, so the cover seals against the box rather than ending at open air. Access adds seals at the front and rear of the toolbox. Both approaches are water resistant rather than waterproof, the same as any tonneau cover.
Does the toolbox stay usable with the cover installed?
The Extang covers mount in front of the box, so the box and its lid sit outside the covered area. The Access cover runs on a frame that sits about 1.5 inches above the box. Lid style and latch position vary between tool box brands, so check the lid swing on the box against those two mounting positions.
How much bed space does the toolbox take up?
Roughly the depth of the box, so 18 to 21 inches off the front of the bed depending on the model. The cover then spans what is left. On the Access cover the roll stores in front of the toolbox when it is open, which leaves the remaining bed length completely clear.
Do these covers require drilling?
No. All three lines clamp on and install without drilling and without tools. Extang uses Jaw-Grip front clamps and EZ-Lock rear clamps. Access uses its Tight Bite clamp system with eight clamps. Each one comes off the same way.
Can a standard tonneau cover be modified to work with a toolbox?
No. Cutting a standard cover down destroys the frame geometry, the seal, and the warranty, and it will not close against the box. A toolbox-compatible cover is manufactured at the shorter length with the sealing hardware built in. Buy the version made for it.
