Three ways to protect a truck bed

A bare truck bed is painted sheet metal. One load of gravel, one slid toolbox, or one dropped tailgate latch and you have a scratch that turns into rust. Everything in this collection stops that from happening, but the three approaches protect in different ways and are worth understanding before you buy.

A drop-in bed liner is a rigid plastic tub that covers the floor and the walls. It is the most protective option against impact, which is why contractors run them, and it is the one to buy if you actually throw cinder blocks and lumber into the bed. A carpet bed liner covers the floor, the walls, and the bulkhead in a soft, textured surface. It looks finished, it keeps cargo from sliding, and it is far quieter than plastic. Husky Liners builds these under the Guardian name, which is the BedRug line brought under the Husky brand.

What is the difference between a bed liner and a bed mat?
A bed liner covers the floor and the walls of the bed. A bed mat covers the floor only. If your concern is scratching the bed sides while loading, or you want the whole bed protected, you want a liner. If you mostly want to stop cargo sliding and protect the floor, a mat does the job for a lot less money and comes out in minutes.
Drop-in liner or carpet liner?
A drop-in is rigid plastic and takes impact better, which is what you want if you throw heavy or sharp things into the bed. A carpet liner is softer, quieter, keeps cargo from sliding, and looks more finished, which is what you want if the truck is newer and the bed sees gear rather than gravel. Both cover floor and walls, and both come back out.
Do drop-in liners cause rust?
This is the old complaint, and it came from loose fitting universal liners that trapped water and grit against the paint and let it grind. Modern liners are custom molded per bed with drainage designed in, which is most of the problem solved. If you want to eliminate the concern entirely, a carpet liner drains through and dries rather than holding water against the metal.
Will a bed liner work with my tonneau cover?
In most cases yes, but it depends on whether the liner is under rail or over rail. An over rail liner covers the bed rail itself, which can interfere with how a cover clamps. An under rail liner leaves the rail exposed and is the safer pairing. Tell us which cover you run and we will confirm the combination before you order.
Are these better than a spray-in liner?
They are different tradeoffs. Spray-in is permanent, seamless, and cannot be removed. Everything here drops in, comes back out, and can be replaced if it is damaged without touching the bed underneath. For a leased or resale-minded truck, removable is the safer call. For a work truck you will keep forever, either route works.
