Overview
The AMP Research PowerStep is a power retractable running board that drops down the moment a door opens and pulls back up under the body when the door closes. It is the original patented power retractable step, and it settles the tradeoff truck, Jeep, and SUV owners live with between a step wide enough to actually use and a body line with nothing hanging under it.
Each board is die-cast aluminum, strong enough for daily entry and exit without loading the vehicle down with extra weight. Stainless steel hinge pins and hardware handle road salt, spray, and the grit that collects behind a front tire. A military-grade black PTFE coating guards the aluminum against oxidation and abrasion, and the boards wear a textured black powder coat finish that stays dark and low key. The step face measures 6 inches wide and runs cab length, with a textured, slip-resistant tread and low-profile LED courtesy lights integrated into the board. PowerStep carries a 600 lb load capacity, so a work boot, a toolbag, and a passenger pulling themselves up by the grab handle are all well inside what the board is built for.
Retracted, the board tucks up under the body, so ground clearance and the factory profile stay exactly where the vehicle left them. That is the whole reason the line exists. A fixed running board is always visible and always in the way on a steep driveway or a rutted trail, and a truck with no step at all asks a lot of anyone climbing into it.
Key Benefits
Automatic deployment - The board is already down and waiting before a boot leaves the ground, and it retracts on its own once the door shuts, with nothing for the driver to operate.
600 lb load capacity - The single-motor retracting step is rated to 600 lb, which covers a full-size adult in work gear with room left over.
Hidden when parked - Retracted boards sit tight under the body, so the vehicle keeps its factory line and its ground clearance on trails, ramps, and steep driveways.
Corrosion-resistant build - Die-cast aluminum boards, stainless steel hinge pins and hardware, a military-grade PTFE coating, and a textured black powder coat finish stand up to salt, moisture, and abrasion.
Wide, lit footing - The 6-inch cab-length tread gives a full work boot real grip in rain, snow, and mud, and the integrated LED courtesy lights put light on the step and the ground beside it.
Lower step height - PowerStep drops farther than a fixed running board, which shortens the climb for kids, shorter passengers, and anyone getting in with both hands full.
How It Works
PowerStep uses a single-motor design. Open a door and the board swings down and out on its linkage arms into the step position. Close the door and it folds back up flush under the body. There is no switch to reach for and no habit to build, since the door itself is the trigger.
On newer applications, the system connects to the OBDII port through a Plug-N-Play module, so the hookup is plug-in rather than spliced into factory wiring. Every kit ships with the wires and motors for that application, so the electrical side of the job comes in the box rather than getting sourced separately. For owners who want manual control over when the boards deploy and retract, AMP Research offers an Override Switch separately.

Installation
PowerStep mounts to the vehicle rocker panel. Every kit is vehicle specific, so the bracketry, wiring, motors, and hardware in the box are matched to that application rather than adapted to fit it. The installation guide that ships with the kit covers the complete tool list and the estimated time for that particular vehicle, which is worth reading before anything comes out of the box.
AMP Research recommends professional installation for all PowerStep running boards, though experienced DIYers install them at home. Applications that use the Plug-N-Play OBDII module connect at the port instead of splicing into factory wiring, which takes a step out of the electrical side of the job. Installation videos are available for many popular applications for anyone who wants a step-by-step visual to work alongside the printed guide.

About AMP Research
AMP Research holds the patent on the PowerStep and built the original power retractable running board. AMP Research is a RealTruck company.
PowerStep carries a 5 year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship when the boards are installed to the provided instructions. Coverage runs five years from the date of purchase and ends if the boards are removed from the original vehicle or the vehicle is transferred to another owner. It is not transferable from the original purchaser.
The warranty does not cover damage, defects, or malfunctions caused by misuse, abuse, accident, improper installation, modification, inadequate maintenance, or on-road and off-road hazards. Within the warranty period AMP Research will repair or replace a defective product at its option and at no charge for the product itself, though labor to remove or reinstall it is the owner's cost. If a product has been discontinued, AMP Research may substitute a current product of comparable function and value.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the AMP Research PowerStep made of?
The PowerStep uses corrosion-resistant die-cast aluminum boards with stainless steel hinge pins and hardware. The step surface carries a military-grade black PTFE coating over a textured, slip-resistant tread, so the aluminum is protected from oxidation and abrasion. The finish is a low-key textured black that stays discreet against the body of the truck.
How do the PowerStep running boards operate?
The PowerStep is a power-retractable running board. A single-motor design automatically deploys the board when you open the door and retracts it flush under the body when the door closes, so you keep the factory look and your ground clearance. Newer applications connect through the OBDII port with a Plug-N-Play module. An optional Override Switch is sold separately if you also want manual control of the boards.
What comes in the box and how hard is the install?
Each PowerStep kit includes a pair of boards, the motors and wiring, a vehicle-specific mount kit with all brackets and hardware, and a vehicle-specific installation guide. The boards mount to the rocker panel and select newer applications use a Plug-N-Play OBDII connection instead of splicing. AMP Research recommends professional installation, though experienced DIYers do install them at home. Truck Bed Barn can talk you through the process at (623) 272-6510.
How much weight can the PowerStep hold?
The PowerStep is rated to a 600 lb load capacity per the manufacturer. The die-cast aluminum board and stainless hardware are built for repeated daily use on full-size trucks and SUVs. The step drops lower than a traditional fixed running board, so shorter passengers get a real boost getting in.
What warranty comes with the AMP Research PowerStep?
The PowerStep carries a 5 Year Limited Warranty from AMP Research covering defects in materials and workmanship when the product is installed per the provided instructions. Coverage runs five years from the date of purchase, stays with the original purchaser and the original vehicle, and does not cover damage from misuse, accident, improper installation, or road hazards. Truck Bed Barn can walk you through a claim at (623) 272-6510.
How does the PowerStep handle bad weather and road salt?
The 6 inch cab-length step uses a textured, slip-resistant surface that holds traction in rain, snow, and mud, and integrated low-profile LED courtesy lights light up the step and the ground next to it. The aluminum, stainless hardware, and PTFE coating are built to resist corrosion. In muddy or salty conditions, clean the four linkage hinge points periodically and avoid spraying the motors directly, then apply dry silicone spray to the linkage arms and pivot pins.
Can I run a PowerStep alongside other bed and body accessories?
Yes. The PowerStep mounts to the rocker panel below the doors, so it does not interfere with tonneau covers, bed liners, or bed steps in the truck bed. Many buyers pair it with the AMP Research BedStep or BedStep 2 for bed access. Call or text Truck Bed Barn at (623) 272-6510 and we will confirm the right combination for your truck before you order.
Fitment
PowerStep is sold in vehicle-specific applications, not as a universal step. Board length, bracketry, and wiring all change with the make, model, year range, and cab configuration, so a part number that fits one truck will not carry over to the next one. Confirm the correct application for your year, make, model, and cab configuration before ordering. Fitment gets verified per vehicle rather than judged by eye, and that check takes a minute.
Not sure which PowerStep application matches your truck? Send Truck Bed Barn the year, make, model, and cab configuration, and the right part number gets confirmed before the order goes through.
Not sure it fits your truck? Chat or call our team at (623) 272-6510 before you order to activate our Fitment guaranteed Promise.
