Overview
Power-retractable running boards that drop into place the moment a door opens and pull back in once it closes. The AMP Research PowerStep Smart Series takes that automatic operation and adds smartphone control, so the steps can be overridden from an iOS or Android device instead of a physical switch in the cab.
Construction is heavy-duty alloy throughout. The steps and hinges are anodized cast aluminum, tied together with corrosion-resistant stainless steel hinge pins, and both step surfaces get a military-grade PTFE coating that guards against corrosion and wear. AMP Research rates the boards at a 600 lb load capacity, which covers a full-size passenger plus whatever is in their hands on the way into the cab.
Each board runs the full length of the cab with an oversized 6-inch wide textured, non-slip step pad, and on most applications it drops more than a foot below the door sill plate. That drop is what makes the difference on a lifted rig running oversized tires, and it does the same job on a stock pickup for kids, older passengers, and anyone loading gear into the back seat every day.
Key Benefits
Automatic operation - A single-motor drive on each board deploys them when you or a passenger opens a door and retracts them when the door closes, so nothing has to be pushed, pulled, or remembered.
Smartphone override - The Smart Series app gives manual control of the steps from an iOS or Android phone, with no physical switch needed in the cab.
600 lb load capacity - Cast-aluminum steps and hinges riding on stainless steel hinge pins, rated to hold 600 lb.
Easier entry, front and back - A cab-length board with an oversized 6-inch step surface, plus over a foot of drop from the door sill plate on most applications, puts a real step where the truck did not have one.
Integrated LED courtesy lights - The steps light themselves, so loading up in a dark driveway or a job site parking lot is a lot less of a guess.
Built for salt and grit - Cast-aluminum construction, stainless steel hinge pins, an anodized finish, and PTFE-coated step surfaces stand up to road salt, spray, and weather.
5 year limited warranty - Covers defects in materials and workmanship on boards installed per the provided instructions.
How It Works
The Smart Series ties into the truck's electrical system through a plug-n-play harness and an OBDII module. Open any door and the single-motor drive on that board swings it down and out on its linkage arms. Close the door and the board retracts. There is no button to press and no routine to learn, which is the point of the whole PowerStep line.
What separates the Smart Series from the rest of that line is the app. Open it and you get manual override on demand. Deploy both boards and hold them down while you wash the truck. Lock them in the retracted position before a trail run so they stay tucked out of the way. The command goes through in seconds.

Installation
Installation uses vehicle-specific brackets that mount to the rocker panel. Every kit ships with those brackets, the hardware, and a vehicle-specific instruction guide, so the mechanical side is straightforward and the boards land where they are supposed to.
The wiring is the part to plan around. The included plug-n-play harness and module tie the steps into the factory electrical system with minimal cutting, splicing, or modification, but there is still a harness to route and a module to connect through the OBDII port. AMP Research recommends professional installation, or a skilled DIYer who is comfortable working through vehicle wiring. Install time varies by application, so read the guide for your truck before anything comes out of the box.
The video below runs the install start to finish on a 2019 Ram 1500. Brackets and harness routing change from truck to truck, so treat it as a walkthrough of the process rather than a step-by-step for every application.

About AMP Research
AMP Research is a RealTruck company and the name behind the PowerStep line of power-retractable running boards. The Smart Series is the app-controlled board in that lineup, built on the same cast-aluminum construction, cab-length step, and single-motor drive as the rest of the family.
Coverage is a 5 year limited warranty against defects in materials or workmanship on products properly installed per the provided instructions. It runs five years from the date of purchase, stays with the original purchaser, and expires if the boards are removed from the original vehicle or the vehicle is transferred to another owner. AMP Research repairs or replaces a defective product at its option during that period, and labor to remove or reinstall the product is not covered. Damage from misuse, accident, improper installation, modification, inadequate maintenance, or road and offroad hazards falls outside the warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the PowerStep Smart Series app actually control?
The iOS and Android app gives you manual override of the boards without a physical dash switch. It pairs to the boards over Bluetooth, so you control them from at or near the truck, not from across town. Use it to hold the steps out for cleaning, or to lock them in the retracted position before you hit the trail.
What are the PowerStep Smart Series boards made of?
The steps and hinges are anodized cast aluminum, and the hinge pins are corrosion-resistant stainless steel. Both step surfaces get a military-grade PTFE coating to guard against corrosion and wear. The step pad itself is textured and non-slip, and the finish is a textured black powder coat.
How do the Smart Series boards operate day to day?
They tie into your truck's electrical system and deploy automatically when you or a passenger opens a door, then retract once the door closes. A single motor per board drives the linkage. The app only comes into play when you want to override that automatic cycle.
How hard is the install and what comes in the box?
Each kit includes vehicle-specific mounting brackets, hardware, a Plug-N-Play wiring harness with an OBDII module, and a detailed instruction guide. The brackets bolt to the rocker panel and the harness ties into the factory electrical system with minimal cutting or splicing. Because of the wiring, AMP Research recommends professional installation or an experienced DIYer. Truck Bed Barn can talk you through the process at (623) 272-6510.
What warranty comes with the PowerStep Smart Series?
AMP Research backs the PowerStep Smart Series with a 5 Year Limited Warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship on product installed per the provided instructions. The coverage runs five years from purchase date, stays with the original purchaser, and ends if the boards are moved to another vehicle. Truck Bed Barn helps you file the claim if you need it, at (623) 272-6510.
How much step do you actually get, and will they work on a lifted truck?
The step surface is 6 inches wide and runs the length of the cab, with over a foot of drop from the door sill plate on most applications. Integrated LED courtesy lights the step area at night. That combination makes them a common pick for both stock pickups and lifted rigs on oversized tires.
How do you keep the boards moving smoothly through winter and mud?
Mud, dirt, and road salt can pack into the linkage and cause noise or binding, so clean the four linkage hinge points periodically and any time you suspect buildup. Rinse them without spraying the motors directly, then apply dry silicone spray lubricant to the linkage arms and pivot pins. Do not use grease, oil, WD-40, or any penetrant, and keep protectants off the step surface.
Fitment
PowerStep Smart Series boards are sold as vehicle-specific kits. The brackets, board length, and harness are matched to a defined range of years, makes, models, and cab configurations, which is why a kit built for one platform will not carry over to another. Cab style matters as much as the model, since the board is cut to cab length and a crew cab board will not sit right on a double cab.
Confirm your year, make, model, and cab style against the fitment listed for the kit you are looking at. Fitment is verified per vehicle before the order goes out, so get it confirmed first if there is any doubt.
Not sure which kit matches your truck, or how the app override behaves once the boards are on? Call or text before you order and get it confirmed.
