Overview
The AMP Research PowerStep XTreme is the dual-motor build of the PowerStep, made for trucks that live in road salt, mud, and hard weather. Open a door and the board swings down to step height on its own. Close the door and it retracts against the rocker panel after a three second delay, so there is a real step when it is needed and nothing hanging low when it is not.
What separates the XTreme from a standard PowerStep is the drivetrain. Two motors per side instead of one, driving a rigid cast aluminum board on corrosion-resistant stainless steel hinge pins. That second motor per side is what AMP Research points to for trucks that frequent or live in areas with extremely harsh climates. The aluminum components are anodized before a military-grade PTFE coating goes on, guarding the underlying aluminum against corrosion. The step surface is 6 inches wide, textured black powder coat, and runs the length of the cab, so a work boot gets a real footprint instead of a narrow bar to balance on. From the brackets to the boards, each PowerStep XTreme running board carries a 600 lb load capacity.
Key Benefits
Dual-motor design - Two motors per side instead of the single motor on other PowerStep variants, which is what AMP Research points to for trucks living in extremely harsh climates.
600 lb load capacity - Rated 600 lb per board, from the brackets to the boards, on rigid cast aluminum with corrosion-resistant stainless steel hinge pins.
Anodized and PTFE coated - The aluminum components are anodized before a military-grade PTFE coating is applied, guarding the aluminum underneath against corrosion.
6 inch step surface - An extra wide, textured, slip-resistant step that runs the length of the cab and suits any type of footwear, wet or dry.
Lower deployed step - Drops much lower than a stationary running board, which rests 1 to 2 inches below the body and is often still too far from the ground to be convenient for many passengers.
Integrated LED lighting - Two pair of LED lights wash the running board and the ground below, switching on when the steps deploy and off when they retract.
How It Works
The PowerStep XTreme is powered, not manual, and it takes its cue from the doors. Open a door and the linkage drives the board down and out to step height. Close it and the board retracts against the rocker panel after a three second delay. There is nothing to pull, fold, or remember.
Power comes through an OBD-II connection. On newer applications the module connects straight to the OBD-II port through a Plug-N-Play harness, which simplifies the electrical side of the install. An Override Switch is available separately for manual control of the boards.
The steps can also be parked in the deployed position by hand. Open the door, place a foot on the step, and keep firm pressure on it while the door closes, and the boards stay down.
Keeping the Linkage Clean
Mud, dirt, and road salt collect in the mechanism of any powered board, and trapped debris is what causes noise or binding. AMP Research calls for cleaning the front and rear linkages, all four hinge points, with a pressure washer, while avoiding spraying the motors directly. After washing, apply silicone spray, dry film lubricant only, to all four linkage arms and every pivot pin, including the pins located high on the linkage arm, then cycle a door to work the lubrication into the hinge points. Do not lubricate with greases, oils, WD-40, or penetrants, and do not apply silicone, wax, or protectants to the running board itself. Do this periodically, or any time mud, dirt, or salt becomes trapped in the mechanism.

Installation
The XTreme is a vehicle-specific kit that mounts to the rocker panel, and AMP Research calls the installation straightforward: all hardware, bracketry, and vehicle-specific instructions are included in the box. Where the truck supports it, the Plug-N-Play module handles the OBD-II connection instead of a hunt through factory wiring.
The gotcha is that some drilling is required, as is some splicing of wires, so AMP Research recommends professional installation. The video installation guide below walks through the job on a truck.
What's Included
Vehicle-specific mount kit with bracketry and hardware
Vehicle-specific installation guide
Plug-N-Play OBD-II module on newer applications that use it
The Override Switch is an optional accessory for manual control and is not part of the kit.
About AMP Research
AMP Research builds powered truck steps and running boards, and the PowerStep line is what the brand is known for. AMP Research is a RealTruck company. Like all PowerStep products, the PowerStep XTreme is backed by a 5 year limited warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship on product properly installed per the provided instructions. That term runs five years from the date of purchase and stays with the original purchaser, and it ends if the boards are removed from the original vehicle or the vehicle is transferred to another owner. Damage from misuse, abuse, accident, improper installation, modification, or inadequate maintenance is not covered, which is another reason the cleaning routine above is worth keeping up.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the PowerStep XTreme different from the standard PowerStep?
The XTreme runs a Dual-Motor design with two motors per side, while the other PowerStep models use a single motor per side. That second motor is what earns the XTreme name, giving you more drive strength and redundancy on trucks that see road salt, mud, deep cold, or heavy daily cycling. Everything else in the family shares the same cast aluminum build and LED-lit step, so the motors are the real decision point.
What is the PowerStep XTreme made of and how is it finished?
The boards use rigid cast aluminum construction with stainless steel hinge pins. All aluminum components are anodized and then finished with a military-grade PTFE coating to guard against corrosion and surface wear. The step face itself is a textured black powder coat, 6 inches wide, running the length of the cab for a slip-resistant surface in wet or icy conditions.
How much weight will the PowerStep XTreme hold?
Each board is rated at 600 pounds, so it handles a big guy in work boots with gear in hand without complaint. The rating is per the manufacturer and assumes the boards are installed to the vehicle-specific instructions and mounted to the rocker panel with the supplied brackets. If you are unsure whether your install is correct, call or text Truck Bed Barn at (623) 272-6510 before you load them up.
How does the PowerStep XTreme install and does it need wiring?
The kit is vehicle-specific and includes the mount brackets, hardware, and an installation guide. On newer applications a Plug-N-Play harness connects straight to the OBD-II port, which cuts most of the wiring work out. Some applications still require drilling and wire splicing, so AMP Research recommends professional installation. Truck Bed Barn can walk you through what your specific truck needs before you order.
Do the boards work in snow, mud, and road salt?
That is the environment the XTreme was built for, and the anodized and PTFE-coated aluminum is what keeps corrosion off the hardware. Debris such as mud, dirt, and road salt can pack into the linkage and cause noise or binding, so periodic cleaning is part of ownership. Pressure wash the four linkage hinge points, avoid spraying the motors directly, then hit the linkage arms and pivot pins with dry silicone spray lubricant.
What warranty comes with the PowerStep XTreme?
AMP Research backs the PowerStep XTreme with a 5 Year Limited Warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship when the product is installed per the provided instructions. The coverage runs five years from the date of purchase, stays with the original purchaser, and ends if the boards are removed from the original vehicle or the vehicle changes owners. Truck Bed Barn is an authorized dealer and can help you start a claim at (623) 272-6510.
Can I control the boards manually instead of with the doors?
Yes. The boards deploy and retract automatically with the doors out of the box, and an optional PowerStep Override Switch is available if you want manual control, for example to hold the boards retracted off-road or keep them out on a job site. The integrated LED convenience lights fire when the steps deploy either way. Ask Truck Bed Barn to add the override switch to your order if you want it in the same box.
Fitment
PowerStep XTreme boards are built vehicle-specific, not universal. Board length, bracketry, and harness type all change from one application to the next, so a kit built for one truck will not bolt to another. Coverage spans a wide range of trucks, but availability is not identical across every year, model, and cab configuration, and the newer Plug-N-Play OBD-II connection is application dependent.
Exact fitment gets confirmed per vehicle before anything ships. Have the year, make, model, and cab configuration ready and confirm the application before ordering, and the kit that arrives is the one built for that truck.
Call or text Truck Bed Barn with the truck details to lock in the right PowerStep XTreme kit, or add it to the cart and fitment gets verified before the order goes out.
